Twelve new smoke-free apartments will soon be available for rent in Lincoln County, which is another step in the right direction, says George Haws, the coordinator of Community Connections Tobacco Free Lincoln County Coalition. Many apartment owners have adopted smoke-free policies, and nearly all new construction is designated smoke-free from the beginning, he said.
The new apartments are at 219 Hahn Ave. (two blocks north of Francis and two blocks east of Willow, just west of Wild Bill’s and Wendy’s).
They are owned by BSKS Properties, Haws said.
Haws said secondhand smoke is a serious health hazard and does not stop at the walls. He said it can sicken residents throughout the building.
Haws said smoke also damages walls, furniture, ceilings and floor coverings. Apartment owners can spend thousands of dollars cleaning and repairing an apartment that has been smoked in, he said.
Tobacco Free Lincoln County Coalition maintains an online registry of smoke-free apartments at www.CommunityConnectionsLC.com. Click on “Our Programs,” then “Tobacco Free Lincoln County.”
Information about the BSKS Properties is available by calling 532-0575.
Haws said secondhand smoke can cause breathing problems, learning difficulties, sleeping disorders, ear infections in children, impaired lung development and other problems.
He said it can result in premature birth and in extreme cases, result in sudden infant death syndrome.
Secondhand smoke harms pets, too; it has been linked to problems such as oral cancer and lymphoma in cats, and lung and nasal cancer in dogs, Haws said.
Tobacco Free Lincoln County Coalition is a local partnership, funded by the Nebraska Health & Human Services / Tobacco Free Nebraska Program, as a result of the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement.
