Overpass near Maxwell, May 8

Traffic is moving slower between Maxwell and North Platte on U.S Highway 30 due to the renovation of the overpass just west of Maxwell as well as resurfacing of the nine miles of blacktop.

Heavy equipment, including a crane and backhoe, is at work on the overpass. The overpass was built in the 1980s and is being rehabilitated, said Gary Thayer, the District 6 engineer for the Nebraska Department of Roads.

The approach to the overpass will be improved, and new pilings are being driven to support the overpass, which should result in a smoother ride, Thayer said. The overpass will also get new expansion devices as well as a new asphalt surface.

While the work is underway on the $3.8 million project, only one lane of US 30 is open between North Platte and Maxwell. The job is expected to be complete in October.

Western Engineering is the general contractor. Simon Construction is rehabbing the overpass as a subcontractor, Thayer said.
