North Platte native Kevin Kennedy iii performed Monday night to a full house downtown at the Espresso Shop, following the guitar magic of Blue Swing.

Kennedy played original music for more than an hour to an appreciative adult audience of all ages. He often looped rhythm or harmony lines electronically, giving the show an intriguing and pleasing full sound.

Kennedy describes his music “a beachy mix of alternative country and hip hop.”

Kennedy, who was involved in plays, speech, and multiple bands during high school, attended the College of William and Mary in Virginia after graduating in North Platte. Then he took off to live abroad, explore musical sounds and cultures.

He has visited more than 45 countries, writing music and lyrics.

Members of the North Platte High slam poetry team started the evening with a poem, and then Blue Swing, consisting of Brandon Raby and Steve Barger, played rhythmic gypsy jazz for 45 minutes.

Raby may be the best gypsy jazz guitarist in Nebraska, and Barger showed his musical versatility, switching from fiddle and mandolin to rhythm guitar.

They were joined on two songs by guitarist Brody Lienemann, an 8th grader who is studying with Raby.

Kennedy will be touring the USA for the next two months. Last year, he played in Morocco, Portugal and Spain, among other countries. He has also recorded in Nashville.

His newest music video, for his single "Hola a la Noche," was recorded in Havana and can be viewed on Kennedy's youtube page (Kevin Kennedy iii - Hola a la Noche).

Kennedy is the son of Kevin and Ellen Kennedy of North Platte.

The show was co-produced by the North Platte Bulletin.
