Good year for lilacsTell North Platte what you think

Lilacs, 1200 block of East Third.

Lilacs, which enjoy cool weather and tend to flower profusely every other year, are in bloom around North Platte, creating a treat for the eyes and nose.

Lilacs flower at eye-level — all the better to enjoy their sweet, haunting fragrance, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

The flowers inspire the heart in the springtime, even in trying circumstances, the almanac says.

Poet Walt Whitman thought of lilacs when Abraham Lincoln died:  “When lilacs last in the dooryard bloom’d … I mourn’d, and yet shall mourn with ever-returning spring,” Whitman wrote, according to the almanac.
