In recognition of outstanding contributions to North Platte's tree canopy, the Garden Glove Nursery received the "Green Industry Award" Tuesday night for the integral part it played in assisting Boy Scout Tanner Sims earn the Hornaday Silver Medal for environmental conservation.

Sims led Troop 293 in re-planting 21 memorial trees in Cody Park that were lost to environmental issues.

The owners of Garden Glove, Randy and Penny Billingsley, researched which species matched the memorial plaques and were instrumental in offering trees at greatly discounted prices, and a very benevolent contributor offered to pay for them.

Besides offering a discount for official memorial trees in city parks, Garden Glove gifted various community events and organizations with trees to enrich the "greening" of North Platte.

Mayor Dwight Livingston presented the award on behalf of Parks Superintendent Lyle Minshull.

A total of three Nebraska Community Forestry Awards were presented at the council meeting.

The North Platte Tree Board received the "Future Generations" award, and North Platte was named "Tree City USA" for the 34th consecutive year.
