The point of impact. A rail wheel, foreground, was torn off.

A man was injured Thursday afternoon when the Union Pacific pickup he was driving went off U.S. Highway 30 on the Maxwell overpass and hit a tree.

The injuries were non-life threatening in the single-car accident. The driver suffered neck injuries and his forehead was cut. He was wearing seat belts, Deputy Gaasch of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said.

The pickup was traveling west. It was about halfway down the abutment, and around the curve, when it strayed off the shoulder. It stopped when the passenger corner hit a cottonwood tree.

The pickup was equipped travel on railroad tracks as well as highways, and the accident was caused by a mechanical failure, Gaasch said.
