The North Platte Lady Bulldogs lost in heartbreaking fashion on Thursday when Columbus made a penalty kick with 30 seconds left in the game to give the Discoverers a 2-1 win at Bauer Field. It was the fourth loss in a row for NPHS (5-5). Two of the previous losses were by shootout and the other was a 1-0 decision at Hastings on Tuesday. But Lady Dawg coach Sarah Kaminski vows her team will keep battling.
"The last four games have been hard," she said. "We just keep striving to keep doing whatever needs to be done and keep propelling these girls to be in position to take one of these close games."
North Platte went up halfway through the first half when Kaitlyn Hansen launched a free kick from 25 yards away to Sami Mauch who put it in the net with only five seconds before halftime.
"The girls were working well together and we got to see them meshing well there," Kaminski said. "We had fluid movement."
But with the first half nearly over, Bulldog goalie Leslie Borges tried to clear the ball out but it was intercepted by Columbus (8-3) and passed over to Kennedy Jones who shot the ball over Borges, who was about 10 yards away from the goal, and in to tie the game.
The game then appeared to be heading into overtime but the Lady Bulldogs were called for a handball in the goal box, giving a penalty kick to the Discoverers.
On the PK, Abby Podraza beat Borges with a shot to the left side to give Columbus the victory.
"Both goals were tough," Kaminski said. "We do everything with a lot of effort and heart. But when you give a good team like Columbus chances, they're going to find holes."
