Volunteers sought for state golf tourneyTell North Platte what you think

On May 23-24, the best Nebraska High School Class D boys’ golfers will converge in North Platte for the state championship tournament.

The event is expected to draw 90-100 golfers to the Lake Maloney Golf Course.

Class D is one of the highest-traveling classes, so organizers predict many family, friends and well-wishers to come to North Platte to watch the tournament.

It will take a small army of volunteers to ensure that the boys have a memorable state championship experience, said Courtney Fegter of the visitor’s bureau.

“Helping with a state championship is incredibly rewarding. Just by getting to know these incredible young men, volunteers will find that their hope in the leadership of tomorrow is renewed,” Fegter said.

One of the largest needs is for scoring monitors. The monitors will accompany threesomes around the course in a golf cart, personally recording the hole-by-hole strokes of each golfer as well as helping with the speed of play by watching tee shots and looking for lost balls.

Scoring monitors do not make rules decisions. At least 30 scoring monitors will be needed throughout the tournament, Fegter said.

Other volunteers are needed for the staff of the official scorers, as well as spotters and real time scorers, Fegter said.

Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the North Platte / Lincoln County Visitors Bureau at 308-221-6865 or email cfegter@visitnorthplatte.com.

Priority is given to volunteers who can work both days of the tournament. Volunteers will receive coffee and rolls in the morning, as well as lunch, and those who did not volunteer at the girls’ tournament last fall will receive an official NSAA jacket.

The deadline to volunteer is May 5.
