Hot, dry forecast sparks fire concernsTell North Platte what you think

Wildfire southwest of North Platte, March 16.

Strong winds and low humidity will heighten the danger of wildfires Saturday afternoon and Sunday, conditions that prevailed in March and, in the worst case, led to eight homes burning near Lake McConaughy.

Here are some specifics predicted by the National Weather Service in North Platte:

The forecast is for Sunday, April 9.

• Strong west and northwest winds accompanied by a surge of dry air will sweep into southwest Nebraska Sunday afternoon and last into the evening.

• Along and south of Neb. Highway 26 and I-80, wind gusts to 35 mph are expected. The humidity will fall to around 20% and could drop as low as 10%.

• The temperature will be around 80 degrees.

• Range fires will exhibit erratic behavior with the potential for fast speeds, so control efforts will be difficult.

The fire danger is offset slightly by the prediction that a few light, isolated thunderstorms could develop in the hot, unsettled conditions.

Be careful out there.
