Three men are now in the Lincoln County jail, charged in numerous thefts of car stereos and other items in the Hershey area.

A resident of N. Sand Road, located in the sandhills northwest of Hershey, reported around 7 p.m. Wednesday that suspicious people were around their home earlier in the day.

Deputies talked with the homeowner and neighbors and confirmed the two men were there and had possibly entered a home.

The sheriff’s office said an extensive investigation was conducted, gathering evidence that pointed to Zachary Mendenhall, 22, and Austin Myers, 21, both of North Platte, as the culprits. Investigators believe they entered the home with the intent to steal items.

Deputies found Mendenhall and Myers, charged them with trespassing and conspiracy to commit burglary and took them to the Lincoln County jail.

Conspiracy to commit burglary is a Class 2A felony, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Their jail bonds were set Thursday at $25,000.

In court, visiting Keith County Judge Edward Steenburg filled in for Lincoln County Judge Michael Piccolo and set the bond for Mendenhall. Steenburg followed the previous bond for Myers issued by Lincoln County Judge Kent Turnbull, but noted that the amount was “pretty low for a 2A felony.”

The sheriff's office said the investigation continued Thursday, and Anthony Marquez, 21, of North Platte was charged with theft and possession of much of the stolen property.

According to the sheriff’s report, Mendenhall and Marquez have allegedly been stealing stereos and other items out of cars in the Hershey area for roughly two weeks. The sheriff said the stolen items turned up in North Platte.

Marquez was charged Thursday with theft, criminal mischief, trespassing and possession of stolen property. He was taken to jail, where he was initially held without bond.

The investigation is continuing, the sheriff said Thursday afternoon.
