A stolen handgun used in a teenage shooting March 6 was traced to its original owner, and an 18-year-old is charged will illegal possession, North Platte police spokesman John Deal said Monday.

The shooting occurred March 6 in the 1100 block of West 11th. Christian Vera, 19, was charged with first-degree assault. The victim, Joshell Green, 18, was hospitalized with a life-threatening head wound.

The handgun was recovered in the alley, police said. According to the American Tobacco and Firearm Bureau, the serial number showed the gun belonged to a North Platte man, who confirmed he owned the gun, but was unaware that it was missing from his home, Deal said.

Police believe a 17-year-old male family member stole the handgun in late February and showed it to Dillon White, 18, asking White to take possession of it. Deal said the thief apparently feared he would be caught if he took it back home.

White took the handgun and later traded it to another person for some marijuana, Deal said. White was arrested Friday and charged with illegal possession of a weapon. His bond was set at $25,000.

Deal did not specify further how the gun got into Vera’s hands. He said the investigation is still underway.

Investigators believe several people were playing video games inside the home on West 11th when Vera produced the handgun to show Green. During the process of showing off the gun, Vera discharged one round, hitting the victim in the head, Deal said at the time.

Vera remains in the Lincoln County Jail, held on $250,000 bond.

The 17-year-old family member suspected of stealing the gun has not been cited yet, Deal said Monday.
