For the fourth time this year, Daniel Founds of North Platte has made his way back into the Lincoln County jail.

Founds, 30, was charged Wednesday with stealing a pickup, carrying a concealed weapon, driving under the influence and other charges. He is held on bonds totaling $50,000.

Founds was arrested Jan. 2 for the first time this year after he drove a stolen SUV into the South Platte River and set it on fire. He has been in and out of jail since.

He was recently arrested on March 1 after he allegedly forced open the door of the house of an acquaintance in the 1100 block of Linda Court. He was found with a knife that was classified as a concealed weapon and served 14 days in jail.

He’d been out for just four days when he allegedly stole the pickup right out from under the attention of the owner.

Police spokesman John Deal said police were called at 11:30 p.m. Monday, March 20 to a home in the 400 block of S. Walnut to check out the stolen vehicle report.

The pickup owner told police they were putting items in their 2002 Dodge Ram pickup, getting ready to leave in it. They had put the keys in the ignition and went inside, apparently for more items.

From inside the home, they heard the pickup engine start and it drove away.

Officers were unable to find the vehicle at the time. However, at 1 p.m. Wednesday, a friend of the victim saw the pickup near Fourth and Willow and alerted police.

Deal said an officer caught up with the pickup near 10th and Vine and called for help. Several officers arrived and ordered Founds to get out, but he would not comply. Eventually, officers got the driver's door open and removed him.

Deal said in the process, a fixed-blade knife with a four-inch blade fell from a sheath concealed under the man's clothing. The man was taken into custody and positively identified as Founds.

Deal said Founds displayed several indicators of intoxication, including an open alcohol container in the pickup, but he refused to take a breath test.

Founds is charged with several offenses, including felony theft, driving under the influence (third offense), driving under suspension and refusal to submit to an alcohol test. He is also charged with carrying a concealed weapon, which is a felony because of a prior conviction.

Founds has spent a month and a half in jail so far during 2017.
