On Wednesday, March 15, Godfather’s pizza will donate 15% of pizza sales to the bicycle moto-cross race track project. There will be a silent auction and raffle at the Godfather’s store, Organizer Brandon McCook said.

“Show our local government that we need this,” McCook said in a facebook post.

McCook has said the raceway would be only for pedal bicycles. He believes it would be ideal for North Platte’s central location in the state and country, making the city a destination for a nationally sanctioned, rapidly growing sport.

McCook hopes to appear before the city council soon to officially ask for the use of city property at the southeast corner of Buffalo Bill Ave. and Walker Road.

The land – up to 100 acres -- is already designated for a park of some kind, city officials have said.

The track would cost around $200,000, McCook has said. He said it would be available to the public except during races.

McCook calls his organization 308 BMX, because it would serve the 308 area code and surrounding area.

He said eventually the area could also include a skate park, a mountain bike course, and an area for remote controlled drones as well as remote controlled cars and trucks.

Bicycle Moto Cross, or BMX, has been an Olympic sport since 2008. McCook said it’s great for kids of all ages. Equipment is relatively inexpensive and participating fees are reasonable.

The nearest BMX race tracks are in Kearney and Ft. Collins.

“It’s the fastest growing sport of its kind,” McCook has said. “There are 13,000 local and regional competitions across the country, and 29 national competitions.”

Racers range in age from 3-years-old to well into their 60s, he said.
