Basketball: Bulldogs battle hard in loss to SouthwestTell North Platte what you think

The North Platte High School boys' basketball team went down swinging on Saturday in a 45-40 loss to Lincoln Southwest at the Dawg House.

"I thought we played inspired basketball." NPHS coach Matt Kaminski said. "It's the last game at home for the seniors and everyone's emotional about that but I just saw an inspired team today."

Southwest (8-15) got out to a 10-3 lead after a basket by Jacob Dowd that followed a pair of three-pointers by Cole Homer. But NPHS (2-22) came back and closed to within 13-11 at the end of the first quarter.

The Silverhawks began the second with a three by Dowd and a layup by Collin Kohl to expand the lead and they still had a cushion of 25-19 at halftime.

The Bulldogs established themselves in the first minute of the second half with baskets by Bryson Krull and Zavion Mitchell to pull within two.

But Southwest made another run. Dowd got a dunk on a breakaway and after a free throw by Homer, Trevor Bogle hit a three that made it 31-23.

North Platte answered with a three by Ryan LeTourneau and a layup by Caleb Horne to pull within one-possession again. But the Silverhawks got threes from Gavin Druse and Bogle to make it a nine-point game late in the third.

Southwest led 39-31 going into the fourth but the Dawgs made a late push. It was 40-38 with a little under four minutes remaining when Mitchell got a layup that followed a Will Phillips three.

But Cameron Frederick scored the next two buckets for Southwest to make it a six point game. Horne scored again after that but the Bulldogs couldn't follow it up and the Silverhawks held on.

"We had a few games this season where we had poor shots and poor possessions and we didn't have a lot of those today," Kaminski said. "It still wasn't enough but we got a lot closer when we kept plugging away."
