Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska surpassed a fundraising goal of $100,000 to receive a $75,000 pledge from the Peter Kiewit Foundation for the Lakeview Cabin at Lake Maloney.
Pursuant to the Kiewit Foundation’s requirements, the Girl Scouts needed to raise $100,000 before the pledge would be fulfilled.
Two local events raised a combined total of nearly $18,000.
The events were Volunteers Locked up for Lakeview Cabin and Carol Aten’s 80th Birthday party/silent auction. This financial support will help Girl Scouting and the community for many years to come, said spokeswoman Sandy Nelson. The Girl Scouts sends out a heart felt thank you to the community for its pledges and donations.
The Lakeview Cabin has been used by girls in western Nebraska for more than 50 years. Since the new cabin opened in October 2012, nearly 250 Girl Scouts (girls and leaders) have camped or attended programs at Lakeview.
The newly designed cabin allows two groups to utilize the facility at the same time -- doubling the number of troops and girls that can use the facility and its grounds.
The cabin is also available for lease, and thus far 164 guests have taken advantage of renting the property, Nelson said.
