Police: 'Debt/subpoenea' phone call is scamTell North Platte what you think

The North Platte Police Department has issued a telephone scam alert.

The scam starts with a telephone call that says the victim owes money and they must pay the debt to avoid being “subpoenaed”, arrested and/or jailed.

The police have received three complaints about this scam. The scammer spoke with a foreign accent.

The reason given for “owing” money varied, Police Information Officer Rodney Brown said. In some cases fraudulent documentation has been emailed to the victim to “support” the scammer’s claim.

As is with any similar scam, the caller then makes an attempt to solicit personal and financial information. This is simply a phishing scam.

It is much easier for scammers to rob people electronically than to drive up to an institution wearing a mask and carrying a gun, Brown said.

"Expect more text, phone and e-mail scams like this to continue as people hide behind a computer screen," he said. "It’s a safer, easier and more effective way for thieves to get your money and personal information."

Remember a bank, credit card company or business will not solicit personal information via the phone. If you are subpoenaed, a subpoenea will be personally served by a deputy sheriff.

It should be noted that in some cases a warrant can be issued in regards to civil cases. You should always use caution and never provide that type of information over the phone or email, Brown said.
