The Platte River Valley is the stopover for more than half a million of the cranes on their migration north from Texas, Oklahoma and Mexico.

At about the same time, Canada geese leave the area, after resting on their migration on the same general path.

The photos of cranes in the fields were taken Monday and Thursday on the west edge of North Platte -- east of Homestead Road, north of U.S. Highway 30.

The photo of the flock across the sky at sunrise was taken Sunday.

Thousands of cranes stop between North Platte and Sutherland each year. More cranes stop from Overton to Grand Island, where tourists can stop to see and photograph the big birds.

In Lincoln County, the annul migration remains largely undeveloped for tourism.
