Cars must be moved off the main streets whenever a snow emergency is declared. North Platte officials declared an emergency at 6 p.m. Wednesday, as a storm arrived.

Public Service Director Wes Meyer said cleanup crews started clearing streets at 6 a.m. Thursday, then went over about two-thirds of the streets a second time in the afternoon and evening.

The snow emergency was officially lifted at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

About six inches of snow fell in the area, with some reports of nine inches.

The National Weather Service at the North Platte Airport reported just four-and-a-half inches there, containing 0.40 inches of moisture.

Meyer said crews also bladed streets at the North Platte, St. Pat's and Our Redeemer Lutheran schools, as well as the core streets downtown. Crews will go back to those places after hours and haul away the snow.

Snow on residential streets will be left to melt, he said.

Drivers are reminded to drive cautiously, as most streets and parking lots are still snow packed.

There have been six reported accidents since Wednesday evening, with no injuries. Slick roads were a factor, a North Platte police spokesman said at 2 p.m. Friday.
