Raptor recovery meetings set at Lake McConaughyTell North Platte what you think

The Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District will host a Raptor Recovery Nebraska educational program on March 2 at the Lake McConaughy Visitors Center.

Central is sponsoring two separate sessions on Saturday, March 2. The first is at 10 a.m., MST and the second at 1 p.m., MST. Educational birds will be on site while representatives present information about Nebraska’s birds of prey as well as the organization’s mission and purpose.

The public is welcome to attend at no charge. However, donations to the Raptor Recovery Nebraska program will be accepted to help restore injured birds of prey to health and release them back into the wild, organizers said.

There are many types of hawks, eagles, owls and falcons in Nebraska.

The Raptor Recovery Center was founded in 1976 and has since treated more than 6,000 birds of prey with over half of rehabilitated birds released back into the wild. This 501(c)¬(3) non-profit organization is operated by volunteers and by donation. Often working with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Raptor Recovery Nebraska provides birds with necessary surgeries and forms of treatment, as well as rehabilitation measures before returning them to the wild.

Birds with severe injuries that cannot be returned to the wild are often used as “foster parents” at the recovery center, as well as used for research and educational programs across the state.
