Three apply for school boardTell North Platte what you think

Two North Platte women and a man would like to be on the North Platte school board, replacing Justin Schwartz, who recently resigned.

Schwartz left for another town in his job with Nebraskaland National Bank, leaving a rare post-election opening on the board.

The district advertised the opening and three people wrote to express their interest in the job.

On Feb. 26, the board will interview each candidate at a public meeting, and plans to vote on the new member.

The three applicants are Lisa Bianco, George Haws and Pat Bartles.

Bianco is currently the president of the North Platte Schoolís Foundation board of directors. A teacher for 11 years, Bianco holds degrees in both Elementary Education and Human Development. She said it is important to have witnessed the classroom both as a teacher and a parent. She has two children. Her youngest is graduating this year from North Platte High School.

Haws is a substitute teacher and just took over as the director of Tobacco Free Lincoln County. Haws has worked for 16 years as a University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension associate.

He has also taught classes at North Platte Community College and the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis.

He has a bachelorís degree in agronomy and a masterís degree in journalism.

Bartels is a former North Platte school board member, from 1992-96. She ran again for the seat in 2012, losing to Mike Morell.

Bartels is a self-employed business woman, operating a downtown sewing shop.

Her children attended Cody School and graduated from NPHS. She volunteered often to help the schools, including playground assistant, PTA president, special education volunteer and president of the high school booster club.
