In a terse, one-sentence statement, Shane Alexander has resigned as the principal of Washington Elementary school. Alexander officially submitted a letter to the North Platte school board on Jan. 28. The board accepted it. Alexander was suspended on Jan. 14 and placed on administrative leave while an investigation was conducted. Retired North Platte Public Schools administrator Mike McPherron is acting Washington principal for the rest of the school year. McPherron retired in 2011 after spending several years at Buffalo Elementary and his last year at Cody Elementary. No details of Alexander’s departure have been released, but superintendent Marty Bassett told the Bulletin Tuesday that it was a difficult decision. He didn’t elaborate. Bassett would not answer when asked if the cause was related to a personal or professional failure. Alexander’s letter read simply, “I hereby resign from my employment and all other contractual obligations with the North Platte Public School District.” The board met behind closed doors. Alexander was principal at Washington since fall 2011. Before then, he was the principal at Eisenhower Elementary for three years.
