I have been away from Boy Scouting for many years; however, I was part of one of the Scout troops that that participated Friday and Saturday in the Klondike Derby near North Platte.

This is the first time I have seen this Boy Scouts of America camping area and I was pleasantly surprised to see the large area so well-maintained.

We were blessed with warm weather and nearly 80 campers enjoyed the experience.

The derby itself was a well-managed, fun event.

In the derby, scouts maneuver sleds through a course, stopping at stations along the way to test their skills in 1) first aid, 2) tracking, 3) starting a fire with limited materials, and 4) reading a compass to navigate on foot.

Troops of the Buffalo Bill district of the Overland Trails Council were invited. Mr. Rick Whitney of Gothenburg took responsibility for managing the event.

I have been to the Philmont Scout Ranch (the largest youth camp in the world geographically) a few years ago and I must say that this event was equal to my experience at Philmont.

I believe Council Executive Dave Plond can be well pleased with the job Rick Whitney and his staff of volunteers did to make the derby a resounding success. Many boys will remember this campout for years to come and I say “well done” and thank you to everyone who helped out.
