The Saturday Night Thunder showcase on Aug. 4 was very evident during the Cruzan Motorsports "Back to School" Night with the fierce racing IMCA features being won by Zach Schultz, Rodger Morash, Mike Nichols, Austin Davis and Jose Sabala.

Winning from the pole position was easier said than done, as North Platte’s Zach Schultz ran through clean air and held off all challenges to win the Modified Feature and the initial heat race for the division.

Points leader Andrew Dillenburg started in the rear of the field and drove his way into the rear view mirror of Schultz, but wasn’t able to climb past the winner and was forced to settle for runner-up honors for North Platte’s Dillenburg.

Rounding out your top finishers in the Modified feature was "The Brady Bullet" Dave Pedersen and North Platte’s Terry Houchin in third and fourth place overall.

Northern Sport Mods

Patience and consistency prevailed for North Platte’s Rodger Morash, as he was the victor in the Northern Sport Modified Feature on Saturday evening. Morash garnered the lead on lap eight and was able to avoid all incidents to make the trip to the winners circle.

Doing an excellent job behind the wheel of his hot rod was North Platte’s RC Heil, as he was high on the steering wheel to finish second overall in the feature from his sixth row starting position in the twenty lap event.

Putting on a great display of working through traffic and riding the fast groove was Corey Cruzan of Maxwell, who got to the front early on, only to face a run from the rear of the field as a result of being involved in a mid-race incident that cost the hotshoe his position.

Cruzan wasted no time in getting back inside the top five and would be third overall when the checkered flag was thrown. Having their best outings of the season at Lincoln County Raceway was Robby Kosmacek and Alex Silos, both of North Platte, as they finished in fourth and fifth at the finish.

Getting their night started on the right foot, Shane Stout of North Platte and Jeremy Halouska of North Platte, both won early heat race action with Halouska also claiming the Dash for Cash checkered flag.

Stock Cars

No stranger to the winners circle, Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa grabbed the lead during lap 10 on a pass down the back straightaway to lead the remaining laps and notch the feature win in the Stock Car Feature.

Currently Casey Werkmeister of Maywood is the season points leader and he did not disappoint, in finishing second overall in the feature, after winning the first heat race of the night.

Werkmeister pulled up to Nichols back bumper numerous times and flirted with a pass off of turn two to pull up door-to-door with Nichols on many of the final laps of the contest.

Leading the way for the first nine laps of the feature was Wallace’s Kyle Clough in his Monte Carlo. Clough would relinquish the lead but would not falter, staying in the throttle to cross the finish line and earn a podium spot in third place.

Putting together their best efforts of the season were Jeff Whiting of Gothenburg and Kent Lower of North Platte as the duo rounded out the top five finishers in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood was a heat race winner in the division, to complete the sweep of heat race victories by the Werkmeister camp.

Hobby Stock

Leading from start to finish, Benkelman’s Austin Davis was a man on a mission. Davis was heavy on the throttle and never trailed in cruising to a Hobby Stock Feature victory to go along with his heat race win.

Persevering from early miscues, Chuck Ledbetter of Loomis held onto the season points lead with a runner-up finish as the races hard charger that came from the back of the pack twice during the 15-lap event.

Arnold’s Brady Weinman struggled to get back within range of Davis and Ledbetter as she spun in the waning laps, but recovered quite nicely to finish third overall. Rick Eller of North Platte and Colt Gibbs of Holyoke, Colo. capped off the top five finishers in the Hobby Stock Feature with their fourth and fifth place efforts.

Sport Compact

Continuing his streak of victories, North Platte’s Jose Sabala led the final eight laps to win the Sport Compact Feature. Sabala was fast on the rugged edge, riding the high groove to the sweep of the heat race and feature wins.

Leading the initial two laps of the feature was North Platte’s Les Brogdon in his Chevy Cavalier. Brogdon finished as the runner-up in the Compact’s main event of the evening.
