Mail: US flag must always be highestTell North Platte what you think

Flags at the Lincoln County Courthouse July 17, raised back to proper heights.

Gov. Heineman recently asked to honor the memory of former Gov. Tiemann by lowering the national flag to half-staff.

I must ask the question, “Why was the flag on the north pole at the Lincoln County Court House flying at full-staff? The stars and stripes were lowered to a half-staff, thereby placing it in a lesser position than the state flag.

I would like to remind those in charge of the flag display at the courthouse that the national flag always flies above any other flag within the boundaries of the state of Nebraska!

I made a few phone calls to find out if there was someone available to correct the situation. However, the last time I drove past the display, the north flag was still flying at the peak of the pole, putting the national flag in a “lesser” position.

I failed in my mission to rectify the situation. I expect many of our local folks, as well as several tourists traveling through North Platte, got a chuckle at our respect for MY national flag. I will ask the county commissioners to add my name to their next meeting so that I may learn who bears the responsibility for this lack of knowledge of this USA law.

I can only apologize to those soldiers in “Harms Way” in Afghanistan and to the entire active duty military men and women serving our country around the world.

I am steamed, concerning this situation.
