Thirty-eight trucks were ordered off the road Tuesday at a surprise inspection along U.S. Highway 83 in North Platte.

Two drivers were also ordered off the road and inspectors levied $4,075 in fines.

Troopers inspected 69 trucks at both ends of town over the course of three hours. One inspection stop was at the intersection of State Farm Road and the other was at U.S. 83 and at 17th St.

The inspections began at 9 a.m. and continued until noon.

Inspectors also found 281violations, Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins said.

The 38 vehicles that were ordered “out of service” had one or more issues relating to bad brakes, bad tires or other problems that pose immediate safety risks, Collins said.

One driver was removed from the road for no operator’s license and another was driving under a suspended license, she said.

This was the fifth surprise truck inspection of the year. Inspections were conducted in Lincoln, Grand Island, Sarpy County and Omaha.

More surprise inspections are planned, Collins said.

The inspections are performed by the Metropolitan Aggressive and Preventative Selective (MAPS) Team, which is funded largely by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Carrier Enforcement Troopers of the Nebraska State Patrol check federal safety regulations and enforce laws pertaining to weight, size, registration and permits of commercial vehicles (trucks, truck tractors, semi trailers, and buses), Collins said.

The MAPS (Metropolitan Aggressive and Preventative Selective) Team was implemented in 1998 and consists of 36 troopers from the Nebraska State Patrol’s Carrier Enforcement Division. On average, 20-24 troopers work each MAPS event.

The inspections are funded largely by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
