The grain trailer broke on Newberry Ave. just north of the Philip Ave. intersection.

The farm truck and trailer belonged to Kenneth Brosius of Logan County and was driven by Aaron Novotny. The truck was loaded at a gravel pit up the road, near the South Platte River. It traveled about one mile north toward a scale at Western Engineering before it broke down, said Lt. Dan Riens of the Nebraska State Patrol, Troop D headquarters.

The wreck occurred at 10 a.m. The driver was cited for hauling an overweight load, which carries a $1,000 fine, and he was assessed $100 for the clean up. During the clean up, the side of the trailer was torn open, so all the gravel could be removed, loaded into two trucks and weighed. What was left of the trailer was towed to a scrap metal yard, Riens said.

After the gravel was weighed and the the weight was added to the truck’s empty weight, the gross added up to 135,700 pounds, about 50,000 pounds above the legal limit of 85,500 pounds, Reins said.

A crew worked until 3:30 p.m. to clean up the spill. Reins said the costs of cleanup would be substantially more than the fine and fee.
