Sen. Mike Groene said Wednesday that he will work with nine other senators on school funding and property taxes this summer and fall.

The school funding legislative study group will meet during the interim before the legislature convenes in January, Groene said.

On Friday, the senators will hold a press conference to discuss more details.

Groene said the people of Nebraska want the Legislature to address property tax relief and they desire a statewide, stable and equitable funding for their public schools.

Groene said factors in the state aid to education have caused an overreliance on property taxes as the major source of school funding.

The group of senators aims to do something about it. Groene is joined by nine of his colleagues, Sens. Tom Brewer, Tom Briese, Curt Friesen, Suzanne Geist, Mike Hilgers, Brett Lindstrom, Lou Ann Linehan, Jim Scheer and Justine Wayne, in creating the TEEOSA School Funding Legislative Study Group.

The press conference will be from 1-2 p.m. Friday in the second floor rotunda of the state capitol.
